Weekly Homework Packets

See the Comment Posts Below for both Current and Archived Weekly Homework Packets
I know as a parent that sometimes we lose or misplace homework packets. Below, you will find an archive of our weekly homework packets. They can be copied and pasted into a Word Document should you lose or misplace one.
Homework Philosophy
Both current and past educational research gives parents and teachers good insight as to what the role of homework should be in the day to day activities of our students. An over-arching theme for both elementary and secondary students is that homework or “home practice” must be PURPOSEFUL. This means that it is an extension of the classroom and that it reinforces what students have learned so that they can do it independently at home. And, independently means they can do it on their own without parents teaching them concepts. Parents’ role is to help them by providing a time and place (routine) at home. The younger the child the more “guidance” that is needed to do the home practice.
What are the Procedures for Homework?
To this end, the homework (home practice) I give seeks to be what is described above. As a parent myself, I also believe that families are busy during the week and some nights might be more conducive to doing more home practice than other nights. I also understand when there is more than one child in the family, doing homework can become a challenge for parents with multiple school age children. This is why I like to give weekly home practice assignments (Weekly Homework Packets) that students can complete at their pace and according to what works best for your family’s schedule. This gives a family the option of doing the home practice during the weekend and/or on week day evenings that works with their schedule. I just ask that the home practice is completed and returned Friday morning when they come to school. I will go over the home practice and return it to you in the next week’s Friday Folder. A good rule of thumb for the amount of time is approximately 10 minutes times the current grade of the student per night. So if we think of doing home practice four nights a week and I have a second grade student then we would be looking at 20 minutes a night or 80 minutes a week as a guideline. Sometimes my home practice is a little more or less than this but if it routinely takes much more time than this than please call me so we can work something out that is successful for your child.
Is Homework Graded?
There is a grade associated with the weekly home practice but I feel the more important part of this class responsibility is the actual practice they do to keep up and improve on their skills. I have found that parents find our weekly home practice to be "flexible" and "purposeful" which helps a great deal in how they go about their family life during the week.
Parent Responsibility
Please check the Friday Folder brought home by your student each Friday. Inside with their completed assignments and projects you will find a stapled packet titled “Weekly Homework Packet.” If I have any special directions for homework packets or projects students are working on I will put these “special directions” in POSTS below on this page. Thanks in advance for your participation in making “home practice” purposeful.
