This purpose
of this page is to provide answers and information that I believe is helpful to
parents of elementary age children. They some of the very things I wondered
about as my children have made their way through school. I hope you will find
the information helpful.
What is my child being taught in reading, math, science and social studies?
There are times when a parent will ask what the kids are learning in a particular subject for that school year. Our content is primarily determined by Michigan state standard which are called content expectations. The nation (via the states, not U.S. Dept. of Ed) has also started rolling out national standards which are being called "common core" standards. The common core is simply a framework for what the state uses in determining their standards. Michigan has adopted the common core standards but it will take several years to roll this out by subject area. As a parent you can view what your child is being taught by visiting the Michigan Department of Education Links below. The PDF’s are lengthy as they are for all grades K-8. It is not “user friendly” in parent terms as its target audiences are teachers and school districts. But, it does have everything we teach and you might find it helpful if that is this is something that interests you. (Links Below)
Note: Simply copy the following links and paste them in your web browser. If for some reason the link does not work then just Google by subject something like this “MDE Math Standards” and you will easily find a current link to the standards.
